Local Action Plans

Actions for NHS Western Isles

Family Planning

·

Review existing family planning service.

·

Work with GPs and primary care staff to identify staff training needs with regards to the delivery of family planning services.

·

Train one NHS nursing staff in family planning each year.

·

Provide refresher training for consultants, nurses and midwives.

·

Provide choice of outreach services, especially aimed at increasing young people's access to contraceptive services.

Genitourinary Medicine

·

Establish Regional Clinical Network to address specialised sexual health services not currently provided locally.

·

Identify and establish the best locality for GUM services to be provided throughout the Western Isles.

·

Provide up to date training for GPs and primary care staff on STIs and confidentiality.

·

Establish links to mainland GUM services.

·

Update and develop further protocols for the implementation of the HIV pre- and post-test counselling service.

·

Investigate possible use of chlamydia postal testing kits.

Primary Care Services

·

Provide up to date staff training on sexual health issues.

·

Produce local resource to inform young people on confidentiality and access to services.

·

Provide free condom distribution scheme through primary care outlets.

Laboratory Services

·

Support laboratory services to work towards implementing local testing.

·

Investigate current laboratory pathways for STI testing and recording of statistics and make recommendations for improvements where necessary in order to provide one clear pathway for all.

Pharmacy Services

·

Work with community pharmacy services to provide emergency contraception.

·

Develop relevant guidelines for the delivery of emergency contraception.

·

Provide staff training on the provision and delivery of emergency contraceptives, addressing issues such as confidentiality.

·

Develop appropriate monitoring and recording systems.

Specialist Sexual Health Services

·

Make link with mainland services for specialised sexual health services including psycho-sexual therapy, erectile dysfunction, etc.

·

Provide further training to consultants and GPs on specialised sexual health services as mentioned above.

External Service Providers

·

Identify mainland external services to support local sexual health services where necessary.

·

Work with relevant partners (local authority, counselling, domestic abuse, rape crisis, NCH, etc.) to develop services further to include wider sexual health issues.

Regional Developments

·

Participate in the development of a North of Scotland clinical network.

·

Establish non-clinical partnership with other sexual health workers to network, share best practice, support and compliment each other’s regional work.

Training and Development

·

Provide training for GP practice managers and reception staff on confidentiality issues and barriers to accessing services.

·

Provide multi-agency training and awareness raising on the National Sexual Health Strategy and delivery implications.

·

Provide training programme for religious leaders and faith groups within the local community.

·

Work with local authority to support schools to ensure the delivery of consistent and appropriate sex and relationship education in all school settings and for those excluded from school.

·

Provide training for parents regarding sexual health issues.

·

Provide sexual health teacher training to support the delivery of sexual health education programmes in schools.

·

Provide NHS staff training on sexual health education programmes in order to support the delivery of school programmes.

Other

·

Establish local multi-agency strategy group.

·

Further develop local sexual health strategy to include key components and actions from the national strategy.

·

Implement local sexual health strategy.

·

Ensure a full range of health promotion programmes are developed and delivered in the context of Community Planning which address the key national and local priorities relating to positive sexual health and well being.
